Hornets

Hornets belong to a category of social wasps known for constructing nests from a papery substance made from chewed plant material and wood. These nests are typically football-shaped.

Common Hornet Species in New York

Bald-Faced Hornet (White-Faced Hornet): This species is prevalent across North America. It measures about 3 cm (1.2 inches) long, is mostly black with white markings, and builds gray nests hanging from tree branches.

Yellow Jackets: Recognized by their bright yellow markings, they build nests on or below ground. A single nest can house up to 15,000 individuals. Their stings are especially dangerous for people with allergies.

European Hornet: Introduced to the eastern U.S. around 1850, these are reddish-brown with yellow streaks and over 2.5 cm (1 inch) long. They build brown nests in hollow trees, rock crevices, or on structures and feed on insects, larvae, and ripe fruit.

Some hornet species do not produce workers. Instead, the female lays eggs in the nests of other wasps, where the host raises them.

Wasps

Stinging wasps depend on nests for rearing their young. Nest structures vary significantly:

  • Digger Wasps: Create simple, straight burrows in the ground.
  • Mud Daubers and Potter Wasps: Build nests above ground using mud attached to twigs, rocks, or man-made structures.
  • Vespoid Wasps (Yellow Jackets, Hornets, Paper Wasps): Construct elaborate paper-like nests from chewed wood fibers mixed with saliva. These can contain hundreds or thousands of wasps.

Wasp Stings

Only female wasps can sting, using their ovipositor to inject venom. Males cannot sting. Stinging occurs strictly in defense of themselves or their nests.

Disturbing aggressive nests (like yellow jackets or hornets) can provoke dozens or even hundreds of wasps, each capable of multiple stings. It is best to leave nests undisturbed or have professionals remove them.

Wasp venom causes histamine release and can break down red blood cells. Most people experience temporary pain and swelling, but about 1% of the population has severe allergic reactions that can be life-threatening.

Hornet and Wasp Pest Control: Know the Difference

Hornets and wasps are often confused with bees, but removal methods differ significantly.

Our approach involves treating or removing nests in the evening when all insects are inside, ensuring complete elimination with minimal risk.
